Case studies of album cover

This is an album cover of j Cole, it shows the viewers that he is lonely in a looks like a sports changing room by himself sitting on the bench. The use of medium shot shows his whole body and his body style and how he is sitting, he looks very serious and focussed alongside his direct eye contact looking straight at us giving us a sense of what he is going through and that his album displays song that he writes and raps about the real world problems and society rather than the typical boy hood rapper with gold chain’s money and cars. The use of clever lighting makes the image seem like he is lonely in a dark room with the sun shining from the window giving a glimpse of light in the room reflecting on the lockers but there is also good artificial lighting in front of him shining on his face.

This is an extraordinary close up yet it's of a side perspective of Tupac, this shot has been utilized to demonstrate the force of his eyes as they gaze straightforwardly at the group of viewers This is to demonstrate that there is importance in what's to be said in the collection. This angle is immediate, it sets a straightforward point. This angle doesn't outline anything besides seriousness.
As the shot is a mid-shot there is no body communication/language. However his outward appearances recommend that this collection would be exceptionally genuine and would appear to be extremely developed into his lyrics and what he is telling you. The lighting in this picture is brilliant particularly because of the way that the foundation is white. The white light sparkles onto this face, this could have been done to recommend innocence and purity.
The effects display in this photo are the highly contrasting, however this has been utilized to demonstrate his two identities. The lighter side of his face could propose the guilelessness he has and the darker side could represent his agony and his hurt, it Permits the audience to listen into his life and feelings of Tupac Shakur.

The below advert is for one of tupac songs, it displays a young child who is scared an hopeless, by giving direct eye contact it gives the viewer a sense of sadness to look and conveys a message that the song is about real life and sad past memories potentially about him when he was younger or his family. I think that this is a good technique and many of Tupacs songs relate to himself and how hard he Grew up and showing an image of a child shows an Evan better insight to his song.

The album advertshows 2 professional hop artist in there stance doing what they do best. They are seen both posing with their chains and clothes giving a direct look at the audience with a message conveying “look at me I am rich and have money”, they emphasize the conventional hip hop image with their bling items. The background can be seen as a war or terror is happening with police, helicopters and smoke and with them being in the front it shows they have power and authority and they are the bad boys with a dog acting vicious none the left shows that they are not liked by some people or may even be possibly wanted.  There attitude show they seem like the boss and wit sunglasses hiding their eyes they don’t need to be seen but only herd as they are the one and only duet.

This is the advert the flowing song by Ugk, its very simple and shows one thing which is the logo of the brand and the artist with a message below which says 4 life. this conveys that his lyrics are Authenticate and real and that only his logo can be shown and his fans can listen without any unique or extensive advising.

The first CD WE AND I chose to analyse would be the album STARBOY by The Weekend. the first thing that stands out for me is the lettering “STARBOY”. With deliberation for the album’s mise en scene, the yellow complements the red used which makes the title stand out quite vibrantly. The actor is taken at an eye level medium long shot, and is dressed in full black. This is effective as this connotes him as a very mysterious figure, which is exactly what he expresses through his Music.  This album cover makes a good idea for myself and my cover I would make because it shows the artist with direct eye contact towards the audience giving a very focused and serious look  with the impression that the song is bring to some truths and maybe about his personal life that he will be rapping about. This contrast with my artist as my song chose is about the artist and his life with lyrics which are genuine and meaning full so a direct contact kind of look for my cover would be very good.

The back cover is kept simple but effective. This is due to the cover’s style which is maintained through the colours of Red and yellow including the text. In addition the layout of the text are in straight order with the text being really big and in bold yellow colour, it showing the songs in a list giving the viewer an immediate glimpse of the songs allocated inside and no other things with I such as an image or promotions or adverts making things that interesting and effective by having only what is necessary.

this is the advert for star boy, it displays a header of the artist and his album with a list of all songs in order, it is very informative and dynamic with a cool design of a sea with iceberg with a background. in my opinion i think that this advert isn't very good or appealing as it has too much information over it it, its over crowded and not appealing which makes people look away as theirs too much to read.

  1. There is some analysis here of the album covers, but you haven't looked at the back covers or inside panels, and you haven't explicitly enough linked these case studies to your own ideas. You haven't looked at any magazine adverts, which you will need to do.
